West Virginia Civil Rights Day

Gov. Joe Manchin III has designated February 24, 2005 as Civil Rights Day in West Virginia and proclaimed that the last Thursday of February each year will be set aside to recognize the West Virginians who made significant contributions during the Civil Rights Movement. February also is recognized as Black History Month.
As part of this commemoration, the Governor Manchin will present the third annual Civil Rights Awards. The Governor has appointed a four-member committee to accept nominations and make recommendations for the awards. The panel is headed by former House of Delegates member Charlene Marshall of Morgantown. Others members include Rev. Dr. Dean Thompson of Charleston; Rev. Homer Davis of Charleston; and Joan Browing of Ronceverte.
